K-Mop 46 Bp: Ergonomics and Operating Comfort for Professional Floor Cleaning

Human factors engineering for the K-Mop 46 Bp: ergonomic product design and objective confirmation of operating comfort on the production product.

Results

  • High operating comfort in everyday work
  • Ergonomic adaptation to different body heights
  • High user acceptance
  • Comfortable grip and operating concepts
  • Pleasant, low-effort use
  • Objectively confirmed ergonomic properties

For the K-Mop 46 Bp from Kärcher, the central question was how a professional cleaning system can be designed to allow comfortable use for users of different body heights. The ergonomics of the K-Mop 46 Bp scrubber dryer have a decisive influence on operating comfort, user acceptance and the physical strain on professional cleaning staff. At the same time, the ergonomic product properties were to be confirmed objectively in order to create robust foundations for product communication and ergonomic marketing claims.

By integrating human factors engineering and usability engineering early on, ergonomic requirements were taken into account already in the concept phase. From the assessment of the context of use through the investigation of handling and operating concept to the ergonomic validation of the production product, the focus was on the user-centered design of the K-Mop 46 Bp.

The collaboration with USE‑Ing. created the basis for integrating ergonomic requirements systematically into product development and for safeguarding the usability of the scrubber dryer across several development phases.

Ergonomics as the basis of product design

The ergonomic quality of a scrubber dryer is influenced by far more factors than its cleaning performance. Factors such as handling, grip comfort, reachability of controls and individual adjustability largely determine how pleasant and efficient a system is to use in everyday work.

Already in an early project phase, the context of use, typical workflows and key interactions with the K-Mop 46 Bp were therefore considered. The focus was in particular on the center of gravity of the system, the position of the control panel and the design of the handle, dead man’s switch and controls. The assessment took anthropometric requirements of different user profiles into account and was based on the range of users between the 5th and 95th percentile.

It became apparent that the perceived lightness of a cleaning system depends on numerous ergonomic factors. The position of the battery and fresh water tank, for example, influences maneuvering and tilting the device upright, while grip geometry and controls are decisive for operating comfort and user acceptance. The reachability of the controls and local pressure peaks at contact surfaces were also identified as important influencing factors.

The insights gained formed the basis for concrete design recommendations for further product layout, from optimizing the weight distribution and ergonomic grip geometries to positioning key controls. This allowed ergonomic requirements to be integrated early into the product development of the K-Mop 46 Bp.

Adaptable to different user profiles

Professional cleaning teams consist of users with different body heights, reach and working styles. An ergonomic scrubber dryer must therefore deliver far more than good cleaning performance. What matters is that the system can be adapted flexibly to individual requirements while offering high operating comfort regardless of the user profile.

For the K-Mop 46 Bp, the focus was in particular on the reachability of relevant controls and the individual adjustability of the system. Anthropometric requirements of different user groups were taken into account already during the design in order to enable comfortable use for a broad range of users. Grip positions, controls and the ergonomic design of the operating concepts played an important role here.

Particular attention was paid to height adjustment and handle locking. Both functions largely determine how well the scrubber dryer can be adapted to different body heights and working situations. The goal was an operating concept that supports intuitive interaction and at the same time enables comfortable working postures over longer periods of use.

The result was a user-centered solution that takes the requirements of professional cleaning staff into account and supports ergonomically convincing use in everyday work.

From the concept phase to objective ergonomic validation

The ergonomics of the K‑Mop 46 Bp did not emerge only at the finished product. Already in early development phases, key use scenarios were considered in order to integrate the requirements of professional cleaning staff systematically into product design. Starting from the context of use and workflows, the focus turned in particular to handling, center of gravity, grip design and the reachability of relevant controls.

The insights gained formed the basis for concrete design recommendations and for the further development of key operating concepts. These included, among other things, the ergonomic design of the handle, dead man’s switch, height adjustment and handle locking. The goal was to enable comfortable interaction with the system while taking the requirements of different user groups into account.

This iterative approach made it possible to take ergonomic requirements into account continuously across several development phases. The combination of human factors engineering, anthropometric assessment and user-centered product design created a robust basis for the later evaluation of the production product.

The final step was an objective ergonomic validation of the finished scrubber dryer using motion capture and pressure mapping. The study confirmed that the ergonomic objectives of the project were implemented successfully and that the K‑Mop 46 Bp supports comfortable use for different user profiles. Height adjustment in particular proved to be an effective means of adapting to different body heights and working situations.

Ergonomics of the K-Mop 46 Bp in professional cleaning use

The project concluded with the ergonomic evaluation of the production-ready K‑Mop 46 Bp. The goal was to verify the previously defined ergonomic requirements under realistic conditions of use and to evaluate the usability of the scrubber dryer objectively.

The focus was in particular on operating comfort, individual adjustability and the support of ergonomic working postures during typical cleaning tasks. Complementing user-centered product development, motion capture and pressure mapping enabled an objective view of relevant interactions between user and product.

The study confirmed in particular the effectiveness of the height adjustment concept. The K‑Mop 46 Bp can be adapted comfortably to different body heights and supports both smaller cleaning staff and tall users with pleasant use in everyday work. As a result, the ergonomic objectives of the project could be confirmed traceably on the finished product.

In addition, the validation showed that the grip and operating concepts are designed for high operating comfort and support low-effort use of professional cleaning systems. The results thus provided a robust basis for communicating ergonomic product properties and for evaluating the user experience in practical use.
